20MW Cogeneration Plant

Our team assisted Riverside Forest Products (now Tolko Industries) with the selection and installation of major equipment and the complete building structure for a 20 MW biomass cogeneration plant in Armstrong, British Columbia. The cogeneration plant converts wood waste into renewable energy in steam and power, producing steam for an on-site veneer plant and exporting power to the USA.

Our Approach

The project became viable with the sourcing of a well-conditioned steam boiler, turbine generator/air-cooled condensers, and a building, supported by sound engineering and the selection of knowledgeable contractors to refurbish and improve the equipment and structures.

The work included dismantling and reinstalling the following equipment from existing plants in California:

  • A 330,000 lb/hr 875 psig 900 °F boiler proper.
  • A 20 MW extraction/condensing turbine.
  • Air-cooled condensers.
  • Auxiliary equipment.
  • The building structure.

We also assisted with the equipment transportation logistics, which were well-planned and well executed.

The engineering services for the project included:

  • Process integration.
  • Civil, structural, piping, and materials handling design.
  • On-site construction engineering.
  • Start-up assistance.

The project was fast-tracked from financing to permitting, communities and in-house support, design coordination, and installations.

Detailed Engineering for Rehabilitation of Water Treatment System at Société Ivoirienne de Raffinage (SIR)

In 2014-2015, Norda Stelo was commissioned by SIR in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to carry out a detailed engineering study to propose amendments, replacements, upgrades or renovations required to ensure the proper operation of all water treatment equipment in unit 65. This unit was designed to remove insoluble hydrocarbons, and comprises various pieces of equipment, including two static longitudinal settlers (API settler), a flocculator and the dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit. The rehabilitation of unit 65 was essential in view of the construction and commissioning of a downstream biological treatment unit. This unit would enable SIR to meet future, more stringent environmental standards.

Valero’s Flare

Energie Valero wanted to replace the main flare (54″ diameter x 300′ high). Norda Stelo was initially commissioned to determine the best of three possible scenarios, and then to carry out the detailed engineering for flare replacement during a planned shutdown of operations.
