The successful candidate will contribute to the execution of mining studies at all stages, including scoping, pre-feasibility, feasibility and sensitivity analyses. Projects may range from development and construction of new mines to improvements at existing facilities or support for ongoing production.

Responsibilities include designing and planning mine layouts, infrastructure, and site facilities, as well as organizing mining operations to maximize efficiency while ensuring worker safety and environmental protection. The role may also involve supervising teams of professionals, managing technical aspects of projects of varying scale, and supporting activities at active mine sites.

Mine Design and General Mining Engineering 

  • Develop mine designs.
  • Produce mine designs or guide technicians and junior engineers in preparing mine designs or technical drawings, primarily for open-pit operations (underground experience is considered an asset).
  • Determine appropriate drilling and blasting methods and patterns for mining operations and provide guidance on these methods.
  • Locate, plan and design various mine infrastructure layouts, including ground support patterns, dewatering and pumping systems, energy supply systems (electric or fossil-fueled), mine and production monitoring systems, etc.
  • In collaboration with other engineering specialists, calculate, select or specify the necessary equipment, tools and facilities that are most efficient and cost-effective, based on the project’s characteristics and production objectives.
  • Select appropriate mining equipment for production, development, or auxiliary services according to project needs, and request supplier quotations as needed.
  • Prepare estimates of operating cost (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) related to projects for financial modeling purposes.
  • Perform financial analyses as required.
  • Conduct trade-off studies when multiple options are being considered for a given situation.
  • Present results and reports to clients


General Administration 

  • Conduct weekly follow-ups with clients, draft memos and respond to their inquiries.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and project follow-ups.
  • Draft internal technical procedures.
  • Monitor the technical aspects of projects using the project management system.
  • Provide input on service proposals upon management request.
  • Perform various administrative tasks as requested by management or immediate supervisor.
  • Collaborate and coordinate projects with internal resources and external consultants to ensure successful project execution.
  • Participate in the drafting of technical reports such as NI 43-101 or SK-1300 and be able to act as a qualified person.


Skills Development 

  • Potentially supervise, coordinate, or review the work of technicians, other engineers and interns depending on the project, providing technical support as needed.
  • Ensure knowledge transfer across the team.
  • Train new employees, contract workers and temporary staff on the use of software tools, particularly for open-pit mine design.
  • Assess client questions and requests on various topics as needed.


Field Visits 

  • Conduct site visits to assess existing infrastructure, ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and verify progress towards project development and mining production goals.
  • Identify specific project characteristics.
  • Take photographs and prepare reports to support field assessments.

 

Our essentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Over 15 years of experience in the mining industry and mining engineering.
  • Licenced professional engineer in one of the following U.S. states: Utah, Nevada, Arizona.
  • Licenced professional engineer from other Canadian provinces or U.S. states is advantages. ).
  • Over 5 years of experience in project management.
  • Relevant experience in surface mining operations (underground mining experience is a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of the mining sector in the Utah & Nevada regions.
  • Position based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in mining-related software and tools (MineSched, Deswik, Whittle are considered assets).
  • Knowledge in other mining engineering specialties is an asset: rock mechanics, ventilation, operations research, mining environment, drilling and blasting and planning.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
